This is probably the question I get asked more than any other. People spend a lot of time picking the right TV, the right wall, the right mount — and then they eyeball the height and end up with a neck ache two weeks later. I’ve done thousands of installs across Miami and I’ve seen every version of this mistake. The good news is it’s easy to get right if you know what to measure.
The rule I use on every job is simple: the center of the TV screen should sit at roughly eye level when you’re seated. Not standing, not lying down — seated, in the spot where you actually watch TV.
For most living rooms in Miami, that measurement from the floor to eye level lands somewhere between 42 and 48 inches. That’s where the center of the TV should go. So if you’re mounting a 65-inch TV — which is about 32 inches tall — the bottom of the TV ends up around 26 to 32 inches off the floor. That might feel low when you’re standing in the room installing it, but the moment you sit down it feels exactly right.
I’ve re-done a lot of installs where the TV was mounted at 60 or 65 inches to the center because it “looked right” from across the room while standing. It never feels right once you’re actually watching it.
The number one mistake I see after 10 years of doing this is TVs mounted too high. It looks fine from across the room. It’s uncomfortable every single time you sit down to watch.
Height and viewing distance are connected. The farther you sit, the less a few inches of height difference matters — but getting the distance right still affects how comfortable the whole setup feels. Here’s what I recommend based on screen size:
43” TV: 6 to 9 feet from the screen
50” TV: 6.5 to 10 feet from the screen
55” TV: 7 to 11 feet from the screen
65” TV: 8 to 13 feet from the screen
75” TV: 9 to 15 feet from the screen
These aren’t strict rules — they’re starting points. A lot of Miami apartments and condos have living rooms on the smaller side, which means you’re often sitting closer than you’d ideally like. In those cases I usually recommend sizing down on the TV rather than trying to make a 75-inch screen work in a room that’s only 10 feet deep.
In a bedroom, you’re usually watching from a different position — lying down or propped up against a headboard. The TV naturally goes higher on the wall, and that’s fine. The fix is using a tilting mount so the screen angles slightly downward toward you. Without the tilt, you end up craning your neck upward even in a position that should be relaxed. I install tilt mounts on almost every bedroom TV I do.
This comes up a lot in Miami homes, especially in newer construction. A fireplace wall is a natural focal point and people want the TV there — I get it. The problem is that above a fireplace almost always means above ideal eye level, sometimes by 12 to 18 inches. The only way to make it comfortable is with a full-tilt or drop-down mount that brings the screen to a watchable angle. Without it, you’re looking up at the TV the entire time, and that gets uncomfortable fast. I’ll be honest — if someone tells me they want a TV above a fireplace and they don’t want a tilting mount, I always make sure they understand what they’re getting into.
In bigger spaces — which you see a lot in Doral, Kendall, and newer Miami-area builds — there’s sometimes more flexibility because the viewing distance is greater. But the eye-level rule still applies. The main thing I adjust in larger rooms is seating position and screen size, not mounting height. More distance is not a reason to push the TV higher.
Before any install, I always recommend this to customers who want to be sure: sit down in your normal viewing spot and have someone mark the wall at your eye level. That mark is your target for the center of the TV.
If you want to go a step further, use painter’s tape to outline the TV on the wall at different heights before committing to anything. It takes five minutes and it’s saved a lot of people from a placement they regret. I’ve had customers do this and move the TV down four or five inches from where they originally planned — and every single one of them was glad they checked first.
Every install is a little different, but these are the factors that change where the TV actually ends up:
Seating height — a low sectional sofa puts your eye level lower than a standard couch
Distance from the wall to the seating area — closer seating means height matters more
TV size — larger screens have more vertical real estate, which gives a little more flexibility
Room layout — sometimes the ideal height isn’t possible because of outlets, windows, or trim
Natural light and glare — in Miami, with all the sunlight, window placement can affect where the TV should go more than people expect
After doing this in Miami for over 10 years, the same issues come up again and again:
Mounting the TV at a height that looks good from across the room while standing, not while seated
Centering the TV on the wall instead of centering it on the seating area — these are often different things
Skipping the tilt mount when the TV is going somewhere elevated, like above a fireplace or on a high wall
Not accounting for the couch or bed position before deciding on height — furniture moves, but the mount holes don’t
Mounting too high in kids’ rooms or playrooms where kids are sitting on the floor
None of these are hard mistakes to avoid. They just require thinking through how you actually use the space before anyone picks up a drill.
If you’re in Miami and you want the height done right the first time, we handle everything — placement, mounting, and cable management. You can build your quote and book at tvmountsandmounting.com. Same-day appointments are available, and slots fill up early.

No, a licensed electrician is needed for that. If you have a power outlet behind the tv, we can run the power to it. If not, we will make a 2-inch hole behind the TV and below, next to a power outlet in order to have the power cord run behind the wall and come out right next to the power outlet as pictured below.
Not if you purchase a complete TV installation package or a tv wire concealment service.
Two 2-inch holes are made (on drywall only) to run the cables from the tv to the nearest power outlet inside the wall where they are not visible.. The holes are covered with grommets to look nice.
If the cables cannot go behind the wall, they are run down over the wall and covered with a white plastic that can be painted the same color as the wall.
You can but you don’t have to. You can purchase a wall mount from us for your own convenience and our installer will take it to you the day of the installation.
Our professional installers have all the experience necessary to prevent any damage as much as possible. In the unforeseen case of an accident, our insurance will cover any damages.
